Two crucial details enabled the identification: the service number 410097 painted on the dome, and the acronym RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) on the inner brim. These clues made it possible to search the Australian National Archives (naa.gov.au), where records of Ryan were found.

Dai documenti risulta che James Patrick Ryan, nato il 9 agosto 1919 a Northcote (Victoria), era Pilot Officer della RAAF. Il 9 febbraio 1945 il suo Spitfire SM257 venne abbattuto nei pressi dell’Aia, in Olanda. Sopravvissuto, fu fatto prigioniero e rimase nei registri come disperso fino alla liberazione. Records show that James Patrick Ryan, born on 9 August 1919 in Northcote (Victoria), served as a Pilot Officer in the RAAF. On 9 February 1945 his Spitfire SM257 was shot down near The Hague, Netherlands. He survived, was captured, and remained listed as missing until liberation.
