This section gathers some unique stories of helmets that took part in the Italian Campaign. These are not just shells and badges: behind each helmet lies a fragment of life, a soldier, a family, and events worth remembering. This helmet, found in a chicken coop near Faenza, shows the signs of everyday reuse as a feeding bowl. Beneath the paint, the insignia of the 54th Division and the Royal Artillery reappeared, clues that help reconstruct the movements of British units in Italy. Alexander James McLean - Un elmetto canadese MKII e la storia di due fratelli Alexander James McLean - A Canadian MKII helmet and the story of two brothers

Questo elmetto canadese MKII, prodotto dalla G.S.W. nel 1940, è interessante già dal punto di vista tecnico per i supporti del liner montati al contrario. Le marcature interne B20035 A.M. - C.F.C. - 11 COY hanno però permesso di ricostruire una storia molto più ampia, collegando il pezzo al soldato canadese Alexander James McLean. This Canadian MKII helmet, manufactured by G.S.W. in 1940, is already interesting from a technical point of view because of the liner lugs mounted in reverse. However, the internal markings B20035 A.M. - C.F.C. - 11 COY made it possible to reconstruct a much wider story, linking the piece to Canadian soldier Alexander James McLean.

Arruolato nel Canadian Forestry Corps nel 1940, McLean fu successivamente trasferito alla fanteria e assegnato ai Cape Breton Highlanders, R.C.I.C.. Cadde in azione il 13 dicembre 1944 durante il passaggio del fiume Lamone, nei pressi di Ravenna. Poche settimane dopo morì in Italia anche il fratello Keith Mabin McLean; i due furono infine sepolti insieme al Villanova Canadian War Cemetery, nella tomba 7B3. Enlisted in the Canadian Forestry Corps in 1940, McLean was later transferred to the infantry and posted to the Cape Breton Highlanders, R.C.I.C.. He was killed in action on 13 December 1944 during the crossing of the Lamone River, near Ravenna. A few weeks later, his brother Keith Mabin McLean also died in Italy; the two brothers were eventually buried together at the Villanova Canadian War Cemetery, in grave 7B3.

Questo elmetto appartenne al maggiore Anthony Charles Bovill Malcolm-Sim, ufficiale dei Royal Engineers e comandante, durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, della 171st Tunnelling Company. La sua figura unisce in modo particolare la storia militare e quella mineraria: prima del secondo conflitto mondiale aveva già maturato una lunga esperienza come ingegnere minerario e aveva servito, durante la Prima guerra mondiale, nelle compagnie tunnelling dei Royal Engineers. This helmet belonged to Major Anthony Charles Bovill Malcolm-Sim, an officer of the Royal Engineers and, during the Second World War, commander of the 171st Tunnelling Company. His figure brings together military and mining history in a particularly interesting way: before the Second World War he had already built a long career as a mining engineer and had served, during the First World War, with the Royal Engineers tunnelling companies.

L'elmetto conserva fregi e segni identificativi che lo collegano a un ufficiale con una vicenda personale documentata: dall'esperienza nelle miniere del Sud Africa e della Gold Coast al servizio militare nei reparti specializzati del genio, fino al comando di una compagnia impegnata in lavori sotterranei, rifugi e opere tecniche. Un oggetto che racconta non solo un reparto, ma una competenza professionale messa al servizio della guerra. The helmet preserves badges and identifying marks linking it to an officer with a documented personal history: from his experience in the mines of South Africa and the Gold Coast to his military service in specialized engineer units, and finally to the command of a company employed in underground works, shelters and technical construction. It is an object that tells not only the story of a unit, but also of a professional expertise placed at the service of war.

The helmet of Albert Swancott, belonging to the Royal Army Service Corps, is a direct witness of his fate in the Italian Campaign. Un esempio particolarmente significativo è l'elmetto MKII del sergente A.W. Leaman, Royal Army Service Corps, matricola T6584258. Il pezzo conserva una complessa stratificazione di verniciature, con tracce di mimetica a due colori sotto successive mani khaki chiare, il fregio RASC, una rete mimetica riparata d'epoca e una targhetta interna con i dati del proprietario. La presenza del nominativo permette di collegare l'elmetto a un soldato documentato, menzionato nel gennaio 1944 per servizi nel teatro del Middle East. A particularly significant example is the MKII helmet of Sergeant A.W. Leaman, Royal Army Service Corps, service number T6584258. The piece preserves a complex layering of paint, with traces of two-colour camouflage beneath later light khaki coats, the RASC badge, a period-repaired camouflage net, and an internal tag with the owner's details. The presence of the name makes it possible to link the helmet to a documented soldier, mentioned in January 1944 for services in the Middle East theatre.

Royal Canadian Artillery - L/Bdr A. Sterling Royal Canadian Artillery - L/Bdr A. Sterling

Un altro elmetto particolarmente interessante è questo MKII canadese del Royal Canadian Artillery, appartenuto al Lance Bombardier A. Sterling, arruolato a Fredericton, New Brunswick, e collegato al 1st Anti-Tank Regiment, 90th Anti-Tank Battery. Il numero reggimentale canadese riportato sull'elmetto ha permesso di ricostruire il reparto di appartenenza e di collegare il pezzo alla storia della 1st Canadian Infantry Division. Another particularly interesting helmet is this Canadian MKII of the Royal Canadian Artillery, belonging to Lance Bombardier A. Sterling, enlisted at Fredericton, New Brunswick, and connected with the 1st Anti-Tank Regiment, 90th Anti-Tank Battery. The Canadian regimental number found on the helmet made it possible to reconstruct the unit and link the piece to the history of the 1st Canadian Infantry Division.

La configurazione dell'elmetto, datato 1942, con fregio Royal Canadian Artillery, vernice mimetica verde/grigio scuro e forte usura d'uso, lo rende un esemplare molto rappresentativo del percorso dei reparti canadesi dalla Sicilia alla Campagna d'Italia, fino al successivo trasferimento in Olanda nella primavera del 1945. The configuration of the helmet, dated 1942, with Royal Canadian Artillery badge, dark green/grey camouflage paint and heavy service wear, makes it a very representative example of the Canadian units' path from Sicily through the Italian Campaign, before their later transfer to the Netherlands in the spring of 1945.
