Per gli elmetti MKII bellici furono utilizzate varie viti di fissaggio del liner al guscio. Wartime MKII helmets used several types of bolts to attach the liner to the shell. The most common and standard configurations are: British round head bolt and threaded washer, MKI configuration; British round head bolt and Simmonds Elastic Stop Nut, MKII configuration; British small head bolt and Simmonds Elastic Stop Nut, MKIII configuration; small head bolt with washer and British Simmonds Elastic Stop Nut, MKIII configuration; British medium head bolt and Simmonds Elastic Stop Nut, MKIII configuration; Canadian round head bolt and threaded washer, MKI configuration; South African round head bolt and threaded washer, MKI configuration; Australian round head bolt with washer and threaded washer for Australian and New Zealand MKII helmets, MKI configuration.

La prima configurazione inglese di fissaggio del liner al guscio è costituita da una vite a testa bombata del diametro di circa 13,2 millimetri. Veniva solitamente applicata con vite esterna e filettata interna, ma si possono trovare elmetti con vite rovesciata, cosa comune anche per altre produzioni. British MKI bolt and threaded washer
The earliest British configuration for attaching the liner to the shell used a round head bolt of approximately 13.2 millimetres. It was usually fitted with the bolt on the outside and the threaded washer on the inside, although helmets with the bolt fitted in reverse can also be found, a feature also seen on other productions.

Vite e dado inglesi MKII
Il modello precedente MKI aveva il problema del serraggio che, con l'uso, tendeva ad allentarsi fino a rendere il liner instabile e libero di ruotare all'interno del guscio. Dal 1940 venne introdotto il sistema MKII, con la stessa tipologia di vite ma più lunga, abbinata a un dado esagonale autobloccante denominato Simmonds Elastic Stop Nut. Il dado, grazie all'anello interno in materiale plastico, evitava l'allentamento della stretta vite-dado e rendeva il liner più saldo al guscio. MKII British bolt and nut
The earlier MKI system had a tightening problem: with use it could loosen until the liner became unstable and free to rotate inside the shell. From 1940, the MKII system was introduced, using the same type of bolt but longer, together with a self-locking hexagonal nut called the Simmonds Elastic Stop Nut. The plastic insert inside the nut prevented the bolt-nut joint from loosening and made the liner more secure in the shell.

Vite e dado inglesi MKIII
Nel 1942, con largo uso a partire dalle produzioni del 1943, venne introdotta la vite di fissaggio MKIII, con testa più piccola rispetto alla precedente, verosimilmente per risparmiare ottone. Sono note varianti con diametro della testa da circa 5,5 a 6,5 millimetri. All'interno dell'elmetto veniva applicato il dado autobloccante Simmonds Elastic Stop Nut, come per il modello precedente. In 1942, with widespread use from 1943 production onwards, the MKIII fixing bolt was introduced, with a smaller head than the previous type, probably to save brass. Head diameters of approximately 5.5 to 6.5 millimetres are known. On the inside of the helmet, the Simmonds Elastic Stop Nut was used, as on the previous model. It is not uncommon in MKIII configuration to find a washer between the bolt and the shell.

Una variante di configurazione MKIII prevedeva l'utilizzo di viti con testa più grande, dette "viti medie", le stesse utilizzate per elmetti da carrista o da paracadutista, con diametro di circa 9,5 millimetri. Occorre prestare attenzione agli usi della vite media negli MKII forniti all'esercito greco nel dopoguerra. A variant of the MKIII configuration used bolts with a larger head, known as "medium bolts", the same type used for tank or paratrooper helmets, with a diameter of approximately 9.5 millimetres. Care is required when assessing medium bolts on MKII helmets supplied to the Greek army after the war.

Esempi fuori ordinanza Non-standard examples

Non è raro trovare, tra gli elmetti MKII bellici, varianti del sistema di fissaggio del liner con usi non di ordinanza di viti e dadi. In questi casi è sempre necessario valutare il contesto: recupero di prima mano, eventuale sostituzione del soldato, rimontaggio, pulizia del pezzo o possibile uso postbellico. Non-standard uses of bolts and nuts are not unusual on wartime MKII helmets. In such cases the context must always be assessed: first-hand recovery, possible soldier replacement, reassembly, cleaning of the piece or possible post-war use.

Vite e filettata canadesi MKI
Il sistema di fissaggio canadese denominato MKI, identico allo stesso modello inglese, venne applicato in tutti gli elmetti MKII canadesi prodotti durante il ciclo di produzione bellico. Si possono trovare viti assemblate sia con vite esterna sia con vite interna. L'utilizzo di viti differenti, soprattutto riferibili ai modelli inglesi MKII e MKIII, è riconducibile a usi postbellici. The Canadian MKI fixing system, identical to the British model, was used on all Canadian MKII helmets produced during the wartime production cycle. Bolts may be found fitted either externally or internally. The use of different bolts, especially those corresponding to British MKII and MKIII models, should be regarded as post-war use.

Il sistema di fissaggio degli elmetti MKII sudafricani fu, per tutto il periodo bellico, di un unico modello denominato MKI. Le viti sono sempre montate dall'interno verso l'esterno con filettata molto simile al modello inglese. Si possono trovare elmetti sudafricani con viti inglesi: in questi casi è necessario contestualizzare il ritrovamento per distinguere una possibile sostituzione del soldato da un uso postbellico. The fixing system of South African MKII helmets was a single MKI model throughout the wartime period. The bolts are always fitted from the inside out, with a threaded washer very similar to the British model. South African helmets with British bolts may be found: in such cases the find must be contextualised in order to distinguish a possible soldier replacement from post-war use.

La configurazione tipica degli elmetti MKII australiani e neozelandesi prevede una vite a testa bombata di produzione australiana, fissata internamente con in acciaio zincato e filettata montata esternamente. È comunque comune trovare elmetti di entrambe le nazioni con viti e rondelle filettate modello MKI inglese, poiché nei primi assemblaggi venne utilizzato anche materiale di fornitura inglese. The typical configuration of Australian and New Zealand MKII helmets used an Australian round head bolt, fitted internally with a galvanised steel washer and an external threaded washer. However, helmets from both nations are also commonly found with British MKI bolts and threaded washers, because British-supplied material was also used in early assembly. Australian or New Zealand helmets with British-made MKII fixing systems are also known.

Attenzione agli usi postbellici Post-war uses: caution

L'utilizzo degli elmetti MKII si protrasse in molti eserciti per decenni, generando numerose combinazioni di liner, viti, dadi, sottogola e verniciature. Alcune configurazioni possono essere facilmente confuse con usi bellici. In questa sezione sono riportati soltanto esempi utili come avvertenza: non vanno interpretati come configurazioni belliche senza un contesto certo. MKII helmets remained in use with many armies for decades, producing many combinations of liners, bolts, nuts, chinstraps and paint finishes. Some configurations may easily be mistaken for wartime use. The examples shown here are included only as a warning and should not be interpreted as wartime configurations without reliable context.
