Il più comune oggetto mimetico utilizzato sugli elmetti MKII dalle forze armate del Commonwealth fu sicuramente la rete mimetica. La sua funzione era quella di rompere la forma geometrica dell'elmetto, ridurre i riflessi del sole e permettere l'inserimento di ulteriori elementi di camuffamento, come pezzi di stoffa, foglie, piccoli rami o pacchetti di garze sterili. Le varianti riscontrabili sono moltissime e una catalogazione completa, soprattutto se si considerano anche gli usi postbellici, risulta complessa. Per questo motivo questa pagina ha carattere introduttivo e riassuntivo. The most common camouflage item used on MKII helmets by Commonwealth forces was undoubtedly the camouflage net. Its purpose was to break up the geometric shape of the helmet, reduce sunlight glare and allow additional camouflage elements to be inserted, such as pieces of cloth, leaves, small branches or shell dressings. There are many variants, and a complete classification, especially when post-war use is also considered, is complex. For this reason this page is intended as an introductory summary.

Reti inglesi British nets

Il primo modello di rete utilizzato dall'esercito inglese fu il modello tessuto. Le reti tessute avevano forma quadrata, circa 16"x16" (40,64x40,64 cm), con maglie di circa 10x10 mm. Esistono varianti riconducibili con ogni probabilità a produttori diversi. Questo modello venne poi sostituito dalle reti annodate, più semplici e veloci da produrre e quindi meno costose. The first type of net used by the British Army was the woven model. Woven nets had a square shape, approximately 16"x16" (40.64x40.64 cm), with meshes of about 10x10 mm. Variants exist, probably linked to different manufacturers. This model was later replaced by knotted nets, which were easier and faster to produce and therefore less expensive.

Le reti annodate vennero introdotte dal 1941 per ragioni di economia e robustezza. Sono note in diverse tonalità di khaki, verde e marrone. I modelli più comuni sono quello a maglie piccole, circa 10x10 mm, e quello a maglie grandi, circa 16x16 mm. Nel periodo 1941-1943 le reti erano normalmente della misura 16"x16", adatta agli MKII; dal 1943, con l'introduzione dell'elmetto MKIII, furono prodotte anche reti da 18"x18", più ampie sulla falda. Come per il modello tessuto, una corda di fissaggio era applicata lungo il bordo della rete. Knotted nets were introduced from 1941 for reasons of economy and strength. They are known in various shades of khaki, green and brown. The most common models are the small mesh type, approximately 10x10 mm, and the large mesh type, approximately 16x16 mm. In the 1941-1943 period, nets were normally 16"x16", suitable for MKII helmets; from 1943, with the introduction of the MKIII helmet, 18"x18" nets were also produced, giving greater coverage over the brim. As with the woven model, a fixing cord was attached along the edge of the net.

Reti canadesi Canadian nets

Le reti canadesi sono documentate in molte fotografie d'epoca su elmetti MKII indossati da soldati canadesi nei vari fronti. Le tipologie principali note sono tre, tutte con maglie piccole di circa 10x10 mm: una prima rete tessuta monocroma, nei toni del verde o del khaki; una rete tessuta bicolore marrone e verde, approvata alla fine del 1942; e una rete a corde annodate, sia monocroma sia bicolore. L'ultimo modello bicolore annodato venne prodotto anche nel dopoguerra e utilizzato dai soldati canadesi nella guerra di Corea, montato su elmetti M1. Canadian nets are documented in many wartime photographs on MKII helmets worn by Canadian soldiers on different fronts. Three main types are known, all with small meshes of about 10x10 mm: an early monochrome woven net, in green or khaki shades; a two-tone brown and green woven net, approved at the end of 1942; and a knotted cord net, both monochrome and two-tone. The last two-tone knotted model was also produced after the war and used by Canadian soldiers during the Korean War, mounted on M1 helmets.

Reti australiane, indiane e sudafricane Australian, Indian and South African nets

Anche l'Australia ebbe produzioni di reti mimetiche sia tessute sia annodate. Per le reti tessute sono note diverse tonalità di verde, mentre per le reti annodate sono conosciute varianti con fori piccoli, medi e grandi. Le reti indiane furono prodotte con maglia larga, media e piccola, con corda annodata e spessa: khaki per il teatro mediterraneo e verde per il Pacifico. Sono molto documentate nelle fotografie d'epoca in Nord Africa e in Italia, ma gli esemplari certi montati d'epoca sono difficili da individuare. Australia also produced both woven and knotted camouflage nets. Woven nets are known in several shades of green, while knotted nets are known with small, medium and large holes. Indian nets were produced with large, medium and small meshes, using thick knotted cord: khaki for the Mediterranean theatre and green for the Pacific. They are widely documented in wartime photographs from North Africa and Italy, but confirmed period-mounted examples are difficult to identify.

Le reti sudafricane sono visibili in numerose fotografie d'epoca, soprattutto su soldati sudafricani ma anche inglesi. Il modello bellico presenta una struttura romboidale e una parte circolare sulla cupola formata dai nodi delle maglie inferiori. Le versioni postbelliche si distinguono per il materiale più grezzo e per la diversa costruzione della parte circolare superiore. South African nets can be seen in many wartime photographs, especially on South African soldiers but also on British troops. The wartime model has a rhomboid structure and a circular section on the crown formed by the knots of the lower meshes. Post-war versions differ in their coarser material and in the different construction of the upper circular section.

Altri sistelmi di camuffamento Other camouflage systems

Oltre alle reti prodotte specificamente per gli elmetti, si incontrano anche reti tagliate a misura da grandi rotoli destinati al mimetismo di mezzi ed equipaggiamenti. Queste reti si riconoscono spesso dal taglio irregolare e dalla mancanza di una finitura specifica per l'uso su elmetto. Tra gli altri sistelmi di camuffamento trattati nel libro rientrano inoltre gli Antigas curtain modello 1 e 2, la Anti mosquito net, il raro telino bianco per truppe da montagna, i telini di iuta o Hessian cover e lo shell dressing portato sull'elmetto. In addition to nets specifically produced for helmets, cut nets made from large rolls intended for camouflaging vehicles and equipment are also encountered. These nets are often recognisable by their irregular cut and by the absence of a specific finish for helmet use. Other camouflage systems discussed in the book include Antigas curtain models 1 and 2, the Anti mosquito net, the rare white cover for mountain troops, Hessian covers and the shell dressing carried on the helmet.

L'uso di reti e telini mimetici continuò ampiamente anche nel dopoguerra. Per questo motivo, quando si valuta un elmetto con rete o camuffamento montato, è sempre opportuno controllare la coerenza generale dell'usura, della patina, dei materiali e della configurazione rispetto agli altri componenti dell'elmetto. The use of nets and camouflage covers continued widely after the war. For this reason, when assessing a helmet with a fitted net or camouflage cover, it is always important to check the overall consistency of wear, patina, materials and configuration in relation to the other helmet components.
