Con il termine liner si identifica l'imbottitura interna dell'elmetto. I principali modelli bellici prodotti dagli eserciti del Commonwealth sono riconducibili ai modelli MKI e MKII, con differenze di materiali, distanziatori, marchi e configurazioni a seconda della nazione produttrice. Entrambi i modelli sono costituiti da tre strisce di fibra che formano la struttura, da distanziatori tra liner e guscio, da un'imbottitura superiore e da alette in tela cerata nera a contatto con la testa del soldato. The term liner refers to the internal padding of the helmet. The main wartime models produced by the Commonwealth armies can be grouped as MKI and MKII, with differences in materials, spacers, markings and configurations depending on the producing nation. Both models consist of three fibre strips forming the structure, spacers between liner and shell, top padding and black oilcloth flaps in contact with the soldier's head.

Le alette in tela cerata possono lasciare le tipiche strisce nere sulla cupola esterna degli elmetti quando questi vengono sovrapposti. Con il caldo, infatti, il rivestimento cerato tende ad ammorbidirsi e ad aderire al guscio dell'elmetto sottostante. Per questo motivo è sempre preferibile evitare di impilare gli elmetti MKII. The oilcloth flaps can leave the typical black marks on the outer dome of helmets when they are stacked. In warm conditions the waxed covering tends to soften and stick to the shell of the helmet below. For this reason it is always advisable not to stack MKII helmets.

Il liner MKI sostituì quello ancora in uso dalla Prima guerra mondiale. È costituito da tre strisce di fibra: una circolare attorno alla testa del soldato e due incrociate superiormente, unite da una serie di rivetti. Gli otto distanziatori in fibra gommata sono fissati tramite rivetti: quattro alla striscia circolare e quattro alle due strisce incrociate. L'ovale centrale in spugna di gomma è rivestito inferiormente in tela cerata e fissato in prossimità dell'intersezione delle strisce. British MKI model
The MKI liner replaced the liner still in use from the First World War. It consists of three fibre strips: one circular band around the soldier's head and two strips crossing over it, joined by a series of rivets. The eight rubberised fibre spacers are also riveted in place: four on the circular band and four on the two crossing strips. The central oval rubber sponge is covered underneath with oilcloth and fixed near the intersection of the strips.

Modello MKII inglese
Il liner MKI ebbe una vita relativamente breve. Con l'inizio della guerra in Europa si passò al modello MKII, strutturalmente simile al precedente ma caratterizzato da inserti in gomma fissati nei fori delle strisce al posto dei distanziatori in fibra gommata rivettata. L'ovale centrale venne sostituito da una croce in spugna di gomma nera, unita al liner tramite la vite cupolare. British MKII model
The MKI liner had a relatively short service life. With the outbreak of war in Europe it was replaced by the MKII model, structurally similar to its predecessor but with rubber inserts fitted into holes in the strips instead of riveted rubberised fibre spacers. The central oval pad was replaced by a cross-shaped black rubber sponge attached to the liner by the domed fixing bolt.

Nei liner inglesi si possono riscontrare varianti di materiali e colori nelle strisce della struttura, non sempre nere ma anche rosse o nocciola. L'identificazione si basa su struttura, tipo di imbottitura, distanziatori, marchi del produttore, anno di produzione e taglia. British liners may show variations in the materials and colours of the structural strips, which are not always black but may also be red or tan. Identification is based on the structure, type of padding, spacers, manufacturer's mark, year of production and size.

L'elenco dei produttori inglesi di liner MKI e MKII non è definitivo: non sono note ricerche d'archivio complete e molte informazioni derivano dall'analisi empirica degli esemplari osservati. Tra i marchi noti si ricordano: A Ltd, AG&Co, ANH, ASC, BH&G, BMB, CCL, CG&S, CWS, EA, E&R, FA, FFL, FH, F&L, G&S, Helmets Ltd, H&S, JCS&W Ltd, J&AJB, JS&S, LPC, LWL, M&C, N Ltd, S, SNL, TPB, TTC, Vero, V&E Ltd, W Ltd e W&LC. The list of British MKI and MKII liner manufacturers is not definitive: complete archival research is not known and much of the information comes from empirical study of observed examples. In molti liner si possono osservare simboli e numeri di controllo. Questi marchi vengono talvolta interpretati erroneamente come indicazioni di produzione canadese, mentre sono in realtà marchi di ispezione o controllo qualità. Many liners show symbols and numbers used as control marks. These marks are sometimes mistakenly interpreted as Canadian production marks, while they are actually inspection or quality-control marks.

Liner canadesi MKII Canadian MKII liners

Il Canada produsse esclusivamente liner del modello MKII per i propri elmetti. Sono molto simili agli equivalenti inglesi, ma realizzati con tela cerata meno rigida e con un effetto più "gommato". L'unico produttore noto è VMC, Viceroy Manufacturing Co. of Toronto, con produzioni note dal 1940 al 1943 e nel 1945. Sono note tre varianti principali, distinte soprattutto dalla posizione dei distanziatori. Canada produced only MKII liners for its helmets. They are very similar to the British equivalent, but made with less rigid oilcloth and with a more "rubberised" effect. The only known manufacturer is VMC, Viceroy Manufacturing Co. of Toronto, with known production from 1940 to 1943 and in 1945. Three main variants are known, mainly distinguished by the position of the spacers.

Liner sudafricani MKI South African MKI liners

Il liner MKI fu l'unico modello prodotto dall'Unione Sudafricana. È simile al modello MKI inglese, ma con differenze nei materiali, nella qualità delle imbottiture e nel marchio del produttore. Le alette in tela cerata sono generalmente più ruvide; l'ovale cupolare può essere in feltro marrone o nero, e i distanziatori laterali possono presentare varianti di materiale e colore. L'unico produttore noto è Jager-Rand (Pty) Ltd, con liner datati 1940, 1942 e 1943. The MKI liner was the only model produced by the Union of South Africa. It is similar to the British MKI model, but differs in materials, padding quality and manufacturer's mark. The oilcloth flaps are generally rougher; the dome oval may be made of brown or black felt, and the side spacers may show variations in material and colour. The only known manufacturer is Jager-Rand (Pty) Ltd, with liners dated 1940, 1942 and 1943.

Si possono trovare elmetti MKII sudafricani con liner inglesi MKI o MKII: in molti casi sono riconducibili a usi postbellici, ma la valutazione deve sempre tenere conto del contesto di ritrovamento e dell'insieme dell'elmetto. South African MKII helmets can be found with British MKI or MKII liners: in many cases these are attributable to post-war use, but the assessment must always consider the find context and the helmet as a whole.

Liner australiani MKI e MKII Australian MKI and MKII liners

I primi elmetti australiani possono essere riscontrati con liner MKI di produzione inglese o australiana. I liner australiani MKI sono molto simili agli MKI inglesi, ma si distinguono dal marchio del produttore e da particolari costruttivi come i rivetti di fissaggio dell'imbottitura ovale. Per il modello MKI è noto il produttore Dunlop, Australia, 1940-1941. Early Australian helmets can be found with either British-made or Australian-made MKI liners. Australian MKI liners are very similar to British MKI liners, but can be distinguished by the manufacturer's mark and by construction details such as the rivets fixing the oval pad. For the MKI model, Dunlop, Australia, 1940-1941, is known.

Liner negli elmetti neozelandesi Liners in New Zealand helmets

Gli elmetti neozelandesi furono assemblati con componenti di diversa provenienza. I liner possono essere inglesi MKI o MKII oppure australiani Dunlop. Questa combinazione di componenti deve essere letta insieme a guscio, ganci, vite di fissaggio e sottogola per valutare correttamente la configurazione dell'elmetto. New Zealand helmets were assembled with components from different origins. The liners may be British MKI or MKII, or Australian Dunlop. This combination of components must be considered together with shell, hooks, fixing bolt and chinstrap in order to assess the helmet configuration correctly.

Curiosità e adattamenti d'uso Notes and field adaptations

Non è estremamente raro trovare elmetti inglesi o canadesi con le alette interne del liner tagliate o mancanti. L'eliminazione delle alette poteva rendere più agevole l'uso dell'elmetto sopra un berretto di lana in inverno o sopra un panno usato per assorbire il sudore in estate. It is not extremely rare to find British or Canadian helmets with the internal liner flaps cut away or missing. Removing the flaps could make it easier to wear the helmet over a wool cap in winter or over a cloth used to absorb sweat in summer.

Liner privati e usi postbellici Private liners and post-war uses

Sono noti liner privati di fabbricazione inglese, spesso in cuoio e riconducibili soprattutto a forniture o adattamenti per ufficiali. Trattandosi di produzioni artigianali, non è possibile proporne una catalogazione rigida. In ambito postbellico, diversi stati riutilizzarono o riconfigurarono gli elmetti MKII con liner di nuova produzione: questi casi devono essere distinti con attenzione dagli assemblaggi bellici. British-made private liners are known, often made of leather and mainly associated with officers' private purchase or adaptations. As these are handmade items, a rigid classification is not practical. In the post-war period several countries reused or refurbished MKII helmets with newly made liners: these cases must be carefully distinguished from wartime assemblies.
