Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, ogni reggimento e Royal Corps dell'esercito britannico aveva un proprio blocco numerico a sette cifre per l'assegnazione dei Personal Number.

Non era raro trovare soldati con matricole antecedenti o, a seguito di trasferimenti, con numeri appartenenti ad altri blocchi.

Ad esempio, analizzando i caduti del 5° battaglione del Northamptonshire Regiment sepolti in Italia, su 160 soldati: 62 avevano numeri corretti per il reggimento, 44 numeri riferiti ad altri reparti e 54 numeri del Royal Corps.

Pertanto, il Personal Number non garantisce con certezza l'appartenenza a un reggimento, se non al momento dell'arruolamento. Per ricerche approfondite si può consultare il sito War Force Records. During the Second World War, each regiment and Royal Corps of the British Army had its own seven-digit block of numbers for assigning Personal Numbers.

It was not uncommon to find soldiers with earlier service numbers or, after transfers, with numbers belonging to other blocks.

For example, examining the fallen of the 5th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment buried in Italy: out of 160 soldiers, 62 had numbers corresponding to the regiment, 44 had numbers from other units, and 54 had numbers from the Royal Corps.

Therefore, a Personal Number does not always guarantee the regiment of service, except at the time of enlistment. For further research, one may consult War Force Records.
